University of Phoenix Chicago Campus and 22 young people from the Robert R. McCormick Boys & Girls Club created more than 100 stuffed teddy bears on November 15 at the Chicago Police Department's 23rd District Station at 850 W. Addison in Chicago. The bears were donated to the Department's first-responders unit, which gives the bears to local children they encounter in crisis and traumatic situations. The plush animals offer comfort to children during a stressful experience and represent support and care from the community.
"This is a tremendous opportunity for our young people to engage with local law enforcement and visit the police department while doing something for other children," said Jim Keane, President and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago.
In addition to outfitting and accessorizing the bears, young Club members toured the police department, learned what the police does to keep our community safe, and participated in a safety seminar. As thanks for their work, each Club member received a bear to keep.
"University of Phoenix is committed to playing an active role in the Chicago community and is proud to support first responders as they comfort younger residents in distress," said Denise Stravia, assistant dean for University of Phoenix’s College of Criminal Justice and Security. "Working with Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago and supporting the Chicago Police Department provides our employees the chance to make a lasting impact on the community."
